APS Musicians to Take Stage at State Educators' Conference

Students from Madison MS and La Cueva HS have been selected as all-state honor bands and will perform at the 58th annual New Mexico Music Educator Association's conference.

Each year, music educators from across the state gather in Albuquerque to celebrate and recognize their great industry with a joyous week of music, laughter, and recognition. This year, APS is pleased to announce that two of our district's music ensembles have been selected as honor bands for this event.

"We are very proud of Ms. Van Dyke and the Madison Middle School band program,  as well as Mr. Converse and the La Cueva High School band program," said Luis Delgado, director of APS Fine Arts. "Our district has outstanding music programs and music educators, and we are humbled to see two of our top programs being recognized at the state level."

The La Cueva High School Jazz 1, under the direction of John Converse, has been selected as the 2014 NMMEA Honor Jazz Band. Over the years, the LCHS Jazz Bands have garnered much recognition and they are certainly representative of the many fine jazz band programs that we have in the Albuquerque Public Schools. This is the fourth time the LCHS Jazz Band has been named as the Honor Jazz Band, with the previous years being 2007, 2009, and 2011.

The Madison Middle School Symphonic Band, under the direction of Betsy Van Dyke, has been selected as the 2014 NMMEA Honor Band. They were named the first place middle school concert band at the NMAA State Band Contest in 2000, 2007, and 2008, and finished in either second or third place in 2002, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2013. They consistently earn superior ratings at District VII Music Performance Assessment events. The Symphonic Band received Outstanding Ratings and Awards at the Greater Southwest Music Festival in 2003 and 2007, and the Madison Middle School Jazz Band was named the Best in Class in 2013.
