APS Hosts Job Fair to Recruit Special Education Teachers

Hiring fair set for 1-3 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, APS Building

[Albuquerque, NM]—The Albuquerque Public Schools is hosting a job fair to recruit special education teachers from 1 to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the APS Building, 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE.

“We have about 50 openings for special education teachers at all levels, so we wanted to fill as many of those positions as we can before the start of the spring semester,” said Deborah Dominguez-Clark of the APS Special Education Department.

She noted that all special education students currently have teachers, but adding more would help the district to reduce class sizes. “We try to keep our special education classes small with 8 to 10 students, so that these special needs students can get the attention they need,” Dominguez-Clark said.

She added that recruiting and retaining special education teachers is a challenge nationwide and that in New Mexico, Albuquerque tends to be a hub where families move to get services. “We have large hospitals here, so families tend to move here to get services for their children,” she said.

It is hoped that existing special education teachers, as well as new college graduates or general education teachers, will attend the fair so that they can begin the application process. “Applicants without a special education ‘I-license’ will need to apply for a license before they start work,” Dominguez-Clark added.

Those interested in applying should bring a current résumé and a copy of their teaching license. “We will have staff available who can help them complete the paperwork to apply for an I-license if they are eligible for one,” Dominguez-Clark said.
