APS, City Team Up for ‘Launch to Learn’ Events

Next event is Saturday, July 11, at Erna Fergusson Library

[Albuquerque, NM]—The Albuquerque Public Schools and the city of Albuquerque are joining together for “Launch to Learn,” a series of wellness fairs at local libraries and community centers.

The events will feature on-site immunizations for children, vision and dental checkups, as well as information on healthy lifestyles and insurance.

“This is an unprecedented event to reinvent the summer learning experience for children in the city of Albuquerque,” said Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry. “Our hope is to have children return to school in the fall healthy, happy, and ready to learn."

The city also will hold drawings for free passes to the Albuquerque Bio-Park at the events and provide bus passes to students in summer programs at APS Title I schools, so that families can get to the events more easily.

Kris Meurer, executive director of the APS Student, Family and Community Supports Division, said that the district was eager to work with the city to hold these events throughout the summer at locations that are convenient and visited by children and families.

“We have held insurance enrollment events during the school year where families can get information on Medicaid, Medicare and other insurance coverage through New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange,” Meurer said. “Joining with the city gives us the opportunity to continue these events during the summer.”

Upcoming Launch to Learn events are Saturday, July 11, at the Erna Fergusson Library, 3700 San Mateo NE, and Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center, 501 Elizabeth SE. Both events are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“On-site insurance enrollment will be offered, as well as certified healthcare guides to provide information and assistance in applying for Medicaid or insurance through New Mexico’s Health Care Insurance Exchange,” said Brian Bolding, who oversees Medicaid enrollment for APS.

Those interested in enrolling for insurance should bring proof of citizenship, immigration status or tribal enrollment, a photo ID, proof of residency, income and household size. In addition, individuals should bring any current insurance coverage information or recent unpaid medical bills. Non-citizens may be eligible to enroll as well.
