APS Announces Several Principal Changes
Valerie Atencio is named principal at Volcano Vista HS; five middle schools get new principals.
The Albuquerque Public Schools has announced several principal changes at the secondary level for the 2013-2014 school year.
Valerie Atencio has been named the principal at Volcano Vista High School. She held the position on an interim basis for the 2012-2013 school year, replacing Shelly Green who became the district’s chief academic officer.
Atencio has spent her career at West Side schools. She taught math at James Monroe Middle School before moving to Cibola and then Volcano Vista as an assistant principal. She helped open Volcano Vista six years ago.
Atencio will be assisted by Roz Deasy, who will make the move from Eisenhower Middle School to Volcano Vista. Deasy in familiar with the West Side community, having served as an assistant principal at LB Johnson Middle School before becoming an assistant principal at Madison Middle School and then principal at Eisenhower.
Kathy Alexander will be the new principal at Eisenhower, making the move from Hoover Middle School, where she has been principal since 2008.
Jim Chacho, an assistant principal at Eldorado High School, will take over at Hoover. Chacho has been at Eldorado for four years. Before that, he was an assistant principal at Harrison Middle School.
Amy Mahr, who stepped in at Jimmy Carter Middle School a month ago, will have the ‘interim’ tag removed from her name. Before taking over at Jimmy Carter, she was an assistant at Ernie Pyle and Desert Ridge middle schools.
In addition, two principals will swap schools. Marco Harris will take the helm at Jackson Middle School, while Ann Piper will be the new principal at Wilson Middle School. Piper had been at Jackson for more than a decade. Harris was at Wilson for nine years, first as an assistant and then as principal.
