A is for Art! Will Feature Noted Southwestern Artist

Foundation Event on Sept. 24 to Highlight Student Art, Performances

August 27, 2010

Noted Southwestern artist and former Highland High School art teacher Frank McCulloch will be the featured artist at the Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation’s A is for Art! auction/gala on Sept. 24 at the Albuquerque Museum (map).

McCulloch is a recipient of the New Mexico Governor's Award in the Arts, University of New Mexico Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, Albuquerque Arts Alliance Bravos Award, and the AABA Local Treasure honor. His work has been seen throughout New Mexico for many years.

He will have a piece that will be placed for auction at the event, which will include works by more than 100 APS high school artists.

“We’re thrilled that an artist of Mr. McCulloch’s stature will be part of A is for Art!,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “It’s perfect symmetry – he’s played a part in the APS art scene for many, many years.”

The event also will include live performances from some of the most talented students in the district, including singers, musicians, choirs and bands. The live and silent auctions will feature student artwork from the APS Metro Show – a springtime exhibition of top artwork from APS students. Students will get a percentage of their artwork sales, with the remainder going toward the Foundation’s efforts to help the Fine Arts Department.

“We’ve never done this kind of event, but we want it to become the signature fundraiser the Foundation is known for,” said Casaus. “I know for a fact that you simply won’t believe the talent and skill these kids display – whether it’s painting, photography, sculpture, poetry, singing or musicianship. They’re just fantastic.”

Tickets for the event are on sale through the Foundation website at www.apseducationfoundation.org. They are $25 for adults, $10 for APS students. Tickets also may be purchased through the Foundation at 881-0841.
Sponsorships at the event are available, beginning at $500 and going up to $10,000. For information on the event, see the Foundation’s website at www.apseducationfoundation.org, or call the Foundation at 881-0841.
