2014-15 Calendar Looks A Lot Like This Year's

A board committee unanimously approved the school year calendar that starts on Aug. 13 and ends on May 22. The full board is expected to give it a final OK at its meeting on Dec. 4.

The 2014-15 school calendar approved by a board committee last week looks a lot like this year's calendar with school starting for students in the middle of August and winding up just before Memorial Day in May.

The Policy and Instruction Committee of the APS Board of Education unanimously approved the calendar last week, and the full board is expected to give it a final OK at its meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Next year's calendar includes a two-week winter break beginning Dec. 22 with second semester starting on Jan. 5.

Once again, there will be a two-day fall break in October during the Balloon Fiesta, a day off for Veterans Day, three days off at Thanksgiving, and a spring break that occurs after state-mandated testing and includes the Vernal Holiday (Good Friday).

And, like this school year, the 2014-15 calendar designates the day after President's Day in February as a professional development day for staff, which means no classes for students, though that day could be used as a weather make-up day if needed. Four more weather make-up days are scheduled after Memorial Day May 26-29.

The board has not yet approved a calendar for the district's eight elementary schools on an alternative schedule.
