School Delays and Cancellations

A place to find information about delays, closings, and early releases because of emergencies, snow, icy roads, and other inclement weather conditions.

School Delays and Cancellations

Weather conditions may cause delays or cancellations.

How do Delay and Cancellation Decisions Get Made?

  • The decision to delay or cancel schools due to inclement weather is not taken lightly. As early as 2:30 a.m., APS Police and Student Transportation Services are on the road determining whether roads are clear enough to provide safe routes for school buses loaded with children. Read more >>

Announcement Schedules and Information

Announcements regarding changes to school schedules will be made by the following times:

  • Delays: 5:30 a.m. (or earlier, if possible)
  • Cancellations: 8:00 a.m. (or earlier, if possible)
  • Early dismissal: 11:30 a.m.

Decisions regarding delays, cancellations, and early dismissals are subject to change based on changing weather conditions.

For delay, cancellation, and early dismissal information, check the following places:

  1. APS Website: Albuquerque Public Schools
  2. Facebook: Albuquerque Public Schools
  3. Television and Newspaper Websites:
  4. Radio:
    • KKOB 770AM
    • KANW 89.1FM

When we delay or cancel school, parents will receive a call or e-mail from the parent notification system SchoolMessenger. Check with your school to ensure your phone and email are correct.

Reporting Times For Employees During Severe Weather Conditions

Your responsibility to report to your work site during inclement weather or to remain at your work site despite an early dismissal is often dependent on where you work, and what your role is. APS Human Resources has clearly outlined these roles and responsibilities in Reporting Times for APS Employees During Severe Weather Conditions.

2-Hour Delays: Abbreviated Days

2-hour delays are called when severe weather causes street conditions that would endanger student and school employee safety.

The abbreviated day schedule is a shortened school day that begins 2 hours later than the regular schedule but ends at the regular time.

While schools may have different bell schedules, most schools on an abbreviated days schedule will utilize the following instructional times:

Elementary School
11:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. (including Wednesdays)
Middle School 10:35 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.
High School 9:40 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.

The following services will be canceled on abbreviated days:

  • Zero hour activities
  • Developmental Pre-school Program (DPP) morning classes

School Bus Schedule For Delays

School bus pick-up times for 2-hour school delays will also be 2 hours later than the normal pick-up time.

School Cancellations

Following the decision to implement an abbreviated schedule, weather conditions occasionally worsen to the point that makes it necessary to close the schools.

This announcement will be made no later than 8:00 a.m.

All students, parents, and employees are encouraged to check the APS website, local television, or listen to the radio for announcements concerning changes in the school schedule.

When APS schools are closed for the day, all evening activities are canceled on that day.

Early Dismissal

If severe weather conditions develop during the school day, students may be dismissed early. In the event that students are dismissed early, parents will be notified through the parent notification system SchoolMessenger.

When APS schools are dismissed early, all evening activities are also canceled.

East Mountain Schools

APS East Mountain schools include:

  • A. Montoya Elementary School
  • San Antonito Elementary School
  • Roosevelt Middle School
  • Manzano High School

When APS East Mountain Schools are delayed, Manzano High School will have a delayed start time for all students.

Because Manzano High School serves students who live in the East Mountains and students that live in Albuquerque, an "East Mountain Schools" cancellation may not affect all Manzano High School students.
