Energy Conservation Rebate Programs
As the federal government is mandating that electric providers reduce their environmental footprint and increase energy production through alternative sustainable sources, the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) has started a number of programs that APS is taking full advantage of. In the District participating in the programs listed below, PNM meets electric saving requirements by rewarding the school District for saving energy. Thus far the District has received $145,325+ in rebates.
- Peak Saver (May – August) — This program is designed for large businesses and governmental entities that use a great deal of electricity. Since joining the program in 2009, PNM notifies the District when PNM has reached ‘critical electricity demand’ that will result in a regional brownout if electricity use isn’t reduced. APS responds by shutting down cooling systems in high schools during the low-use summer months. In addition to the District saving electricity and costs, PNMrewards APS for saving the utility company from having to purchase additional costly electricity. APS has received over $32,325 from PNM since joining this program.
- Power Saver (June – August) — Also during the warm weather months, PNM’s energy management company can shut down smaller air conditioning units in the District, pre-authorized by APS, when more electricity is needed. Controls on these air conditioning units are operated via the Internet. (As the District just joined this program in mid-2010, it is too early to report savings.)
- Rebate Program — PNM rewards the District with rebates for switching out high energy light bulbs with more efficient bulbs. In addition to receiving approximately $43,000 in PNM rebates, the District obviously also saves in electrical costs and reduces energy use. The Facilities Design + Construction Division of APS has also received rebates for energy efficiency in new construction totaling over $70,000 to date.
- Quick Saver Program — Designed for small schools and businesses, this program audits a site’s electricity use and identifies equipment retrofit means for savings. An APS/PNM approved contractor provides the District with an estimated cost to do the retrofits. APS does not pay for the evaluation and chooses the work to be done. The new equipment and installation labor costs are absorbed by the rebate and APS pays the difference. The District realizes less capital out-lay, and again, APS reaps long-term electric cost savings.
