Why are Black Student Unions Important?
Black Student Unions are important because or the disparities and disproportionate number of African American/African Descent students and services provided in APS. They are important because all students need to feel that they are an inclusive part of the a school’s curriculum and environment. The Black Student Union is a place where any student may go to find out and participate in the learning of African American History, Culture, and the connections of Africans thought many ethnicities. It is also a safe place for any member of the BSU to speak openly and candidly about their experiences in the school environment and receive support and understanding in addressing a problem or need. Activities that take place at school, district wide, and on the community lev el are planned, discussed, and implemented. Academics, literacy, technology, career awareness, communication and service learning are very important and are strands that are incorporated into all activities in the BSU’s.
