English as a Second Language (ESL) Summer School Program

Summer 2012

The APS Language and Cultural Equity Department is pleased to offer a summer school program specifically designed for PHLOTE students (Primary Home Langauge Other Than English). The summer program is designed to enhance comprehension and increase English academic vocabulary. This is a tuition-free program.

APS elementary, middle school and high school  students identified as “Primary Home Language is Other Than English (PHLOTE), with an ACCESS score of 1 - 4 are eligible to participant in this tuition-free program.

The home school of each student must complete the Student Information/Enrollment form (please complete all requested information: ID number, ACCESS score, grade, etc.). Parents must sign the permission and commitment portion of the form.  Please fill out the Parent Information Form with the school site the child will attend.  This form is to be retained by the parent.

In one mailing, return the Enrollment/Permission form (for all students) to the Department of Language and Cultural Equity (attention:  Louella Buchanan) by 4:30 PM on Friday, May 11, 2012.

Schools identify ESL students and eligibility for ESL program by ACCESS or W-APT placement test:

  • PHLOTE students who score a 1.0 – 4.9 on ACCESS for grades 1-12. Kindergarten students who score a 1 on W-APT placement test.
  • PHLOTE status can be viewed on screen NM230 on School Max
  • ACCESS, W-APT scores GS455 on School Max

If your child has been identified as eligible for ESL Summer School, based on the criteria listed above, and you grant your permission, he or she will attend as follows:

High School: June 13 to July 3, 2012

Career Enrichment Center    7:50 AM to 12:00 PM Monday through Friday

Rio Grande High School       7:50 AM to 12:00 PM Monday through Friday

Middle Schools: Monday, June 13 through July 11, 2012

Harrison Middle School         8:00 AM to 12:15 PM Monday through Friday

McKinley Middle School        8:00 AM to 12:15 PM Monday through Friday

Elementary Schools: June 27 to August 1, Monday through Friday

Alvarado Elementary School                     8:00 - 2:00

Carlos Rey Elementary School                 7:50 - 2:00

Collet Park Elementary School                 7:55 - 2:10

Hodgin Elementary School                       7:55 - 2:00

Manzano Mesa Elementary School           8:55 – 3:45

Painted Sky Elementary School               9:00 – 3:40

Pajarito Elementary School                      8:00 – 2:00
