Special Curriculum

Bilingual and ESL Programs
APS provides enriched programs in:

  • Bilingual Education
  • Dual Language
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Career and Technology Programs
Programs introduce students to specific career areas and give all students options for further education or immediate employment through the use of the most current technology and resources available.

Gifted and Enrichment Programs
Gifted and enrichment instruction are offered to qualifying students in Albuquerque Public Schools to nurture a desire for excellence and a sense of responsibility to self and society.

"Strands" that have been developed by the district assist the students with:

  • Self-understanding
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Thinking skills
  • Creativity
  • Interest development
  • Communication

Secondary Curriculum

Students benefit from a comprehensive high school program with strong basic skills. Many courses are designed to support these skills, including:

  • Honors courses
  • AP courses
  • Dual-credit courses for college credit
  • Fine arts electives
  • PE
  • Technology electives
  • Career classes

Many middle school campuses offer the academic teaming concept where students are part of core teams for reading, mathematics, social studies, science, and English.

Elementary Curriculum

APS offers many early childhood (birth to five years old) programs.

High School Preschool Labs
Most high schools offer a preschool lab in conjunction with the parenting and teaching classes in the family consumer science departments.

Students and teachers have first priority in enrolling their children in the preschool program. Remaining vacancies are made available to the public.

Magnet Schools

A magnet school has a specific curriculum focus designed to attract students who have a special interest in that academic environment. The following programs are offered:

  • Technology
  • Science and scientific research
  • Leadership and international studies
  • Mathematics
  • Contemporary arts
  • College preparation
