2011 Summer Native Language and Culture Institute

Registration will begin the week of April 18, 2011 for the APS Indian Education Department summer program. Information for this program is currently being mailed out to parents. Parents are to return the required documents to the Indian Education Department office no later than May 31, 2011.

Dear Parents/Guardians;

                This letter is sent to you to announce the opportunity for your elementary to middle (K-8) school aged child to participate in the upcoming “2011 Summer Native Language and Culture Institute.” The overarching theme of the summer institute is “We Are All Related.” There will be four cultural classes taught by four state certified teachers. The culture classes will teach around themes such as; plants & medicine, animals, astronomy, and environment. In addition, we will have four classes of Native Language (1) Keres, (1) Tiwa, and (2) Navajo). Registration will begin on April 18, 2011 and conclude on May 31, 2011. We will recruit a total of 160 students for 20 students in each class. The students will be rotated through five classes each day, to allow for one hour per subject and teacher. The teacher to student ratio will be 20:1, with a waiting list of 15 for the classes.

The following is a list of items we will need from you:

  1. A completed registration form (attached with this letter),
  2. A signed “Attendance and Participation Agreement,” and
  3. Verification of student eligibility; a copy of the 506 on file at the Indian Education Department and if not, be ready with appropriate documentation to get one completed at the time of registration.

The Institute will run from June 20-30, 2011. Each day the students will begin classes at 8:00 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. There will no transportation provided, so you will be responsible for getting your child to the school and picking them up afterschool. The location of the institute is still being worked out and will forward the information to you as soon as a school is selected.

We will not take registration paperwork over the phone or by fax, please bring the completed registration forms to the Indian Education Department Office located at 6400 Uptown Blvd, Suite 460W to register your child. This will give us the opportunity to give you additional information regarding the institute. Please contact Mary Abeita or Elizabeth Trujillo at 505-884-6392 if you have questions
