Student Teaching Placement Requirements:

Student teachers requesting placement in the Albuquerque Public School District are required to submit an APS Online Student Teaching Application and complete a Background/Fingerprint Check. Once cleared, the Background/Fingerprint Office will contact the student teacher to sign the Authorization to Student Teach Form, which must be presented to school administration prior to reporting to any school assignment. 

      • Be in good academic standing and complete all university/college requirements for student teaching
      • APS Student Teacher Application (located under the APS jobs page at www.aps.edu/jobs)
      • APS Background/Fingerprinting Information: To complete your background check, you'll need to get fingerprinted at our City Center office. To be fingerprinted, bring a valid photo ID and $44.00. The $44.00 must be made payable to 3M Cogent by Cashier Check, Money Order or Credit/Debit Card.

Substituting During Student Teaching Field Experience:

  • If permitted by the attending university/college, student teachers (not observers) may substitute for their mentor teachers only.
  • Student teachers may not substitute for more than 10 days for their mentor teacher without permission from the college and the Substitute Services Manager.
  • To register as a substitute student teachers should contact Substitute Services to initiate the process.
  • Should the student teacher desire to continue substituting after completing his/her student teaching field experience (i.e. if the period of student teaching stipulated by the college program ends before the public school term ends), the student teacher must follow the appropriate application procedure to become an Albuquerque Public Schools’ employee.
