AsthmaAsthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Common asthma symptoms include wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing.
The APS Asthma Program has been funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School Health since 2003 to establish and maintain a comprehensive asthma management program for APS. The APS Asthma Program offers support to students with asthma by partnering with the school nurses to provide case management and asthma management education. Below is a summary of what the asthma program is doing in schools around the district. Elementary SchoolsAccording to board policy, all elementary school nurses are required to provide Open Airways®, an evidenced-based asthma management educational program, every year to 3rd-5th grade students with asthma. If you are interested in your student participating in this program please contact your student’s school nurse for more information. Middle SchoolsCurrently, the APS Asthma Program is piloting a middle school asthma education program in 10 middle schools.
