The purpose of promoting health and wellness throughout APS schools is to ensure that all students come to school ready to learn or have assistance to mitigate the barriers they have which may interfere with the learning process.
The goals of the APS Health & Wellness Department are to promote safe and drug-free environments which provide the supports necessary to help students increase their academic achievement, maximize their learning potential, and graduate college with the skills needed to be productive, healthy adults.
Other goals of the department are to:
"Health and success in school are interrelated. Schools cannot achieve their primary mission of education if students and staff are not healthy and fit physically, mentally, and socially."

- Improve developmental and environmental readiness for learning
- Increase personal and external assets
- Increase opportunities for mastery of social and emotional skills and competencies that enhance pro-social behavior
- Expand relationships that value diversity as a source of strength
- Align and support collaborations focused on sustainable initiatives / goals
- Align and communicate common academic and social expectations
- Increase access to services and resources that address barriers to learning
- Maintain healthy and safe environments in which to live, learn, and work
- Create connections in school and out of school with families and the community
