On June 2, 2010, the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education approved the district’s $1.2 billion budget for the current school year, which included $38 million in cuts to balance its operating budget for the 2010-11 school year.

The total 2010-2011 APS budget is $1.2 billion. That includes:
- $616 million to fund day-to-day operations of the district with funds coming from sources including
- $595 million from the State Equalization Guarantee
- $6.1 million from federal stabilization funds
- $10 million from other revenue sources

$290.7 million from capital funds (voter-approved property taxes for new construction, renovations, maintenance and technology)

$135.8 million from special revenue funds (grants, athletics, food services)

$114.6 million debt service fund (for repayment of outstanding debt)
The majority of funding from the state is distributed to school districts using a formula known as the state equalization guarantee. The distribution is based primarily on student population and demographics. State of New Mexico revenue comes from a variety of sources including taxes, earnings on investments and federal mineral leases.
