West Mesa Grand Opening Ceremony

What: Albuquerque Public Schools West Mesa High School will celebrate its new, three-story, 26-classroom building which replaces the old M Building and 16 portable classrooms.  

Who: APS Superintendent Raquel Reedy, members of the APS Board of Education, West Mesa Principal Mark Garcia, students, staff and families    

When: 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14

Where: WMHS, 6701 Fortuna Road NW

Project Details:

  • Student enrollment:1,568 students
  • Year opened: 1967
  • Building size: 46,882 square feet
  • Budget: $21.7 million
  • Architect: Mahlman Studio Architecture  
  • Contractor: Thompson Construction  
  • Project completion: July 2016

Phase II of the project includes a two story, 23,000-square-foot building with 12 classrooms.

Phase III of the project includes renovation of the main courtyard.

When it’s complete, the West Mesa renovation will include the demolition of 37,000 square feet with more than 70,000 square feet of new construction. The entire project is expected to be completed next summer.
