APS will kick off a three-day Truancy Blitz with a daylong summit on school attendance co-hosted by Mission Graduate and the Early Childhood Accountability Partnership.

The conference will be held from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, at the Sheraton Albuquerque Airport. School district representatives, community organizations and partners are invited to attend the summit featuring round table discussions and facilitated workshops on research, best practices and possible solutions to chronic absenteeism.

Register here by Jan. 19.

The goal of the conference it to strengthen community partnerships in an effort to reduce truancy so that students have a better chance at success in school. Other sponsors include United Way of Central New Mexico, New Mexico PBS and American Graduate.

The keynote speaker is Debra Durado, executive director of Student health and Human Services for the Los Angles Unified School District. Dr. Duardo has more than twenty years of professional experience working with at-risk students and their families and is recognized as a national leader in dropout prevention and school attendance. Her unique life experience as a high school dropout drives her passion to ensure that all students receive a quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.

Breakfast and lunch will be served.

Registration deadline is Monday, Jan. 19. Register here.

During the second day of the Truancy Blitz, experts will work with the media to provide information and support to families dealing with student absenteeism.

The Blitz will wrap up with a Truancy Town Hall on Saturday, Jan. 24, at Manzano High in which administrators will talk about the district's truancy prevention and intervention program and then open the floor to questions and input.
