Parents,

Do you have a child that has asthma? Do you worry that your child will have an episode and you won’t be there to help?  You are not alone. All parents worry about their kids and asthma problems just add on the stress. In a recent study done by John Hopkins School of Medicine parents are so concerned about exercise induced attacks that 20% of all children with asthma don’t exercise enough; in turn making childhood obesity even worse. But who can blame you? Parents are just ensuring that their kids stay safe. This is where the YMCA comes in.

Contrary to what some parents believe, exercise is great for children with asthma. Just like other kids, children with asthma need to exercise to keep their minds and bodies fit. Those with asthma want to exercise but are taught to slow down and rest during asthma flares. While this advice may be accurate, it was never meant to become a long term solution.  At the Y, the I C.A.N (I can control asthma now) program will educate families about asthma and give your kids a place to exercise and learn safely.

The program consists of three, 8 week Phases starting with gentle yoga and gradually working up to increased cardio and strength training activities.  Not to worry though, parents will be there exercising with their children every step of the way.

Phase 1 which was offered in the fall started off with an assessment of the kids and an asthma education class for both the child and parent. Afterwards, there was a 30 minute gentle yoga class with each week increasing in difficulty. Don’t worry; there was an asthma nurse or respiratory therapist at each session monitoring the children.

In Phase 2 youth and parents will begin to exercise in our wellness center with small increases in cardio activity as they become ready. Selected weight stations will be introduced as folks are ready.  Asthma education will continue in this phase.  Missed Phase I?  That’s okay we can still get you started anyway.  Phase II begins January 9, 2013 at 6:30 PM at the McLeod Mountainside YMCA.  Meet in the lobby of the main building.

Phase 3 will be fun! With lots of games and activities in the Horn Family YMCA’s indoor pool your child won’t be able to get enough!  Start date TBD.

Exercise is very important in a child’s younger years. Helping them to develop physically and emotionally; happier kids are healthier kids. Join us at the I C.A.N program.  Register at the front desk, membership to the Y and parental participation are required. I CAN is offered at no cost but membership to the Y is required.  Financial Assistance is available based on need.
