Coronado Elementary has a long history dating back to the 1930s within its community, but later was closed to students for over 30 years. It re-opened in 2009.

In January, current 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Coronado ES students began working with two award winning local spoken word artist/poets, Jessica Lopez and Manuel Gonzalez. They learned about what makes good poetry exciting, worthwhile and interesting.

In February and March we gathered a dozen Coronado ES alumni and former teachers to visit the school and with the current students. The alumni and former teachers had attended or worked at the school between 1940-1972. The students conducted interviews with these adults to gather information, stories, and memories of their experiences at Coronado and of the neighborhood. From those interviews, the students have workshoped their ideas our guest poets, to create poems of their own. They will share their finish poems with the school, families and former Coronado students during our poetry sharing night.
