Eleven Albuquerque Public Schools marching bands will compete in the 35th annual New Mexico Pageant of Bands, which begins at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Wilson Stadium with the Eldorado High School choir singing the national anthem the EHS JROTC presenting our nation’s colors.

The high school bands will compete against those of comparable size, beginning with the smallest in the morning. A total of 25 bands from across the state will take part in the competition, which began in 1980 to provide a competitive arena for displaying the musical and marching skills of local bands. In its 35 years, the Pageant of Bands has grown to include marching bands from across the state.

The schedule for APS high school bands is as follows:

  • Del Norte 8:00-8:15
  • Highland 8:15-8:30
  • West Mesa 8:30-8:45
  • Valley 8:45-9:00
  • Sandia 11:15-11:30
  • Albuquerque 12:15-12:30
  • Cibola 12:30-12:45
  • Volcano Vista 2:15-2:30
  • Eldorado 2:45-3:00
  • Manzano 3:00-3:15
  • La Cueva 3:15-3:30

An awards ceremony will follow the performances at about 4 p.m.

In an effort to get more people in the stands rooting for smaller bands, pageant organizers are for the first year offering two incentives:

  • Free admission for all middle school students (with school ID) and younger up until 10 a.m.
  • A prize of a musically-themed quilt to be given to a paid ticket holder who enter Wilson Stadium for the competition prior to the start time of the last of the Class 1 & 2A band performances (scheduled for 10:45 a.m.) The winner must be present to win.

The drawing will be held during the break between the 4A & 5A bands, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. It will be presented at the conclusion of the competition during the awards ceremony.
