Near Space Challenge at Balloon Fiesta

Students from a dozen APS schools will launch and track high altitude balloons.

Students from a dozen APS schools will take part in the inaugural Near Space Challenge during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on Monday, Oct. 3, and Tuesday, Oct. 4.

Students will take part in one of three competitions:

  • The Scientific Engineering Challenge
  • The High Altitude Challenge
  • The Landing Accuracy Challenge.

These events highlight student scientific and engineering work, while allowing them to compete for awards as well as high altitude and landing accuracy records.

The six Scientific Engineering Challenge flights will launch on Oct 3. The three High Altitude Challenge and three Landing Accuracy Challenge flights will launch on Oct 4.

Elementary schools may also participate as part of "First Flight," similar to the Balloon Fiesta Dawn Patrol.

Participating APS schools including Van Buren, Garfield, Ernie Pyle, John Adams and Washington middle schools; Eldorado, Highland,Valley and West Mesa high schools; and Chelwood, Carlos Rey and Griegos elementary schools.
