The Legacy of John Milne

Superintendent, 1911 – 1956

John Milne was a Scottish immigrant born in 1880. The Milne family came to Albuquerque to seek a tuberculosis cure. Milne became APS superintendent in 1911 when Albuquerque had 5 public schools. Milne had the vision of Albuquerque as a large city. His foresight in purchasing hundreds of acres of vacant mesa land made today’s APS system possible. The location of APS schools has shaped the Albuquerque we know and experience in 2010.
