The cream of the crop of APS high school art students will be showcasing their award-winning work at the annual Metro Youth Art Exhibit in the Fine Arts Gallery on the grounds of Expo New Mexico (the state fairgrounds). Sponsored by the APS Fine Arts program, the art is created by high school students from Albuquerque Public Schools and judged by professional artists.

The exhibit opening will feature a variety of awards including the city of Albuquerque’s Gordon Church Purchase Award, given to four high school artists. The purchased work is displayed in various city venues and added to the permanent collection of the city of Albuquerque’s Public Art program.

A $1,000 scholarship from the UNM College of Fine Arts will be presented by the new Dean, Dr. Kymberly Pinder. In addition, ribbon place awards and honorable mentions in each of 17 categories, as well as Merit awards provided by local merchants, individuals and arts organizations will be given out.

APS high school musicians will provide music on the weekends, during gallery hours for the duration of the show.

Selected pieces from the Metro Youth Art Exhibit are now offered for sale at A is for Art!, the annual fundraiser sponsored by the APS Education Foundation to benefit both the Foundation and the APS high school visual art programs. This year’s event will be held Sept. 20 at the Hotel Albuquerque.

The exhibit will open with an awards ceremony from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 1. The exhibit will run through March 30. Exhibit hours are from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission to the Fine Arts Gallery is free. Paid parking is available at Expo New Mexico.
