Albuquerque Public Schools Los Padillas Elementary School will commemorate 120 years of educating Bernalillo County children with a celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 15, at the school, 2525 Los Padillas Road in Albuquerque.

The event is free and open to the public.

Currently serving some 300 students, Los Padillas began educating students living the area as part of the Los Padilla land grant that was established before Albuquerque was incorporated as a city. Now the southern-most elementary school in the APS district, the school’s attendance area extends to the Isleta Pueblo boundary on the south.

The celebration of the founding of Los Padillas Elementary in 1890 begins at 10 a.m., Saturday with a performance by Grupo Coatlicue, Aztec dancers. The performance will be followed by remarks from former students including Mark Lovato, an area attorney, and Mary Olivas, a current teacher at Los Padillas.

At 11 a.m. will be the opening of a time capsule buried at the school 10 years ago. The capsule will be re-sealed and buried with new material.

At 11:30 a.m. there will be more entertainment featuring Folklorico del Valle dancers and slam poets. The event ends with dancing featuring DJ Quico from 1 to 2 p.m.

For more information call the school at 877-0108.
