A benefit concert for the La Mesa Arts Academy celebrating visual and performing arts will be held from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at La Mesa Presbyterian Church, 7401 Copper Ave. NE. The concert will feature blues music by the Rudy Boy Experiment and special guests. The event also will include BBQ and a silent auction.

La Mesa Arts Academy is an arts enrichment program for K-5 students of the La Mesa community. As a community response to the limited funding for arts in the schools, La Mesa Presbyterian Church, La Mesa Elementary School and the University of New Mexico Art Education program formed the co-operative to provide free instruction twice a week to the La Mesa Elementary students. Each semester's class offerings vary; they have included a variety of fine and performance arts such as painting and drawing, pottery, beading, weaving, wood- working, wire sculpture, string design, guitar, drama, dance, photography, drumming, and more. Each semester ends with a community-invited arts celebration where the children's art is displayed; the plays, dances, and music are performed; and food are enjoyed. The program is funded by foundation grants and church donations.
