Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. of New Mexico, in partnership with Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) and Mayor Berry’s Office has developed a program to introduce high school students to skilled construction trades.

This course will be a dual credit program for juniors and seniors. The curriculum is nationally recognized and accredited through NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research).

The curriculum will be focused on:

  • Basic Safety
  • Construction Math
  • Introduction to Hand Tools/Power Tools
  • Construction Drawings
  • Basic Rigging
  • Basic Communication Skills
  • Basic Employability Skills
  • Introduction to Materials Handling

To view the ABC Training Facility and learn more about the program, there will be an OPEN HOUSE scheduled for Thursday, August 2, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the ABC Training Facility, 2821 Broadway Blvd. NE.

The class will be offered at the ABC Training Facility. Class begins Sept. 18. It will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

The course will count for 4 CNM credits. Unlike many dual credit programs, there is no accuplacer score required upon entry.

Benefits for these “hands-on” students will be a smoother transition from high school to employment in the construction industry and earning college credit. ABC hopes this program will increase student interest in construction, reduce the student drop-out rate and enhance the employment opportunities in the construction industry after graduation.

For more information, please contact Carla Kugler, program coordinator with Associated Builders & Contractors, Inc., at 830-4222, ext 110.

ABC NM strives to meet the shared manpower needs of the community and business by providing education for the construction industry. The goal is to develop craft professionals who are trained, knowledgeable and responsible.
