Art is Elementary, the annual display of student work from APS elementary schools, will be held at the Indian Arts Gallery at Expo New Mexico (map). Works of art range from painting and printmaking to sculpture and ceramics.

The vast majority of work on display is from the elementary schools that have a visual art teacher from the APS elementary Fine Arts program this year. Several schools that have a music teacher this year have also opted to participate. Space allows for only 12 pieces to be on display from each art teacher, which makes for very difficult decisions. Although there are no awards given at the exhibit, each participating artist receives a certificate and those who are able to attend the opening receive a small bag of art supplies.

“The creativity and spontaneity of elementary art is delightful to see,” said Janet Kahn, APS Director of Fine Arts. “This exhibit celebrates the joy of self-expression and exploration that is unique to elementary age students.”

Art is Elementary is sponsored by the APS Fine Arts program. The exhibit opens with a reception for the artists and their families on Friday, from 4-7 p.m. Music will be provided at the opening reception by elementary music teachers from the APS Fine Arts program.

Art is Elementary will run from Saturday, March 31, through Sunday, April 29. Exhibit hours are Tuesday through Friday from 3-6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free; paid parking is available through Expo New Mexico.
