Annual School to World Event Lets 8th, 9th Graders Explore Careers

Albuquerque businesses, local government, and education will come together again to present eighth and ninth grade students with School to World, an event that provides information on career choices. The School to World event will be held on from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Albuquerque Convention Center (see map).  

Career clusters represented that day include arts, communication and entertainment; business; community; construction and manufacturing; education; health and medicine; public service; and science, engineering and technology. 

Volunteer professionals in each career cluster will explain their job duties, what education and skills training are needed to qualify for their occupation, and why they chose their specific career or job. Most importantly, the volunteers will show students the link between school subjects they learn today with the work skills needed for their future career interests.

There will also be representatives on site from vocational schools, colleges and universities to talk with students, as well as community agencies that promote citizenship and hands-on skill development.

Teachers are encouraged to bring students from their schools. Parents are also welcome to attend with their children.

During School to World, students: 

• Identify their career interests and aptitudes to develop an educational plan which supports personal career goals
• Explore areas of interest and possible career choices
• Understand the structure and function of business ownership in the United States, New Mexico and local economies
• Determine the education and training requirements for careers identified as possible areas of interest
• Demonstrate the technological knowledge and skills required for future careers.
