The fifth annual Digital Desert Youth Film Festival will be held Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, at the South Broadway Cultural Center (map). The event showcases short films by students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Students from across New Mexico submit films that are five minutes or less in nine juried categories: music video, documentary, stop motion, animation, drama/action, comedy, commercial and Zombie/horror. The project is the brainchild of Valley High’s Digital Film Production class instructed by Abel Abeita, who hosted the city’s first youth film festival four years ago.

The top films will be showcased beginning at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday. An award ceremony will follow Saturday’s screening at 8 p.m.

All events will be held at the South Broadway Cultural Center and are free of charge.

Among the sponsors of the Digital Desert Youth Film Festival are the APS Fine Arts Department, the city of Albuquerque Film Office and uPublic.
