Phill Casaus, Executive Director of the APS Education Foundation

Within philanthropy, people are always comparing notes on their “elevator speeches” – the 10-second descriptions of their Foundations and the people they try to serve. You might be surprised how much some folks try to stuff into a few moments in time.

At the Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation, our answer on any elevator ride is short and sweet.

From the ground floor all the way to the top, we only say this: We’re committed to helping kids.

It’s that simple.

The Foundation has been in existence since 1995 and its mission has been clear: do everything humanly possible to aid the district as it educates nearly 90,000 schoolchildren in the state’s largest city. The work of raising money and awareness for public education is complex, but clear. We are dedicated to improving the experience and the success rate for all children who attend APS schools.

We are excited about what the Foundation will do. Our staff of four and volunteer Board of Directors, together with Superintendent Winston Brooks and every teacher and support staffer within the district, will work extremely hard on all educational fronts. But we at the Foundation will concentrate on four special goals – raising money for science/technology/engineering/math, middle school activities, fine arts programs and literacy projects. It’s a challenge we happily embrace – and one we invite you to join.

As an APS product – Sandia High School, Class of 1981 – I’m thrilled by the opportunity to move the Foundation toward greater heights. I’ve learned one thing here – our schoolchildren are the Foundation’s greatest selling point. Perhaps I'm a little biased -- my kids are APS students and my wife is a teacher in the district. I believe in them -- and I believe in the teachers and kids within APS.

With the traction we’ve gained with the Horizon Campaign – and the injection of funds that success will bring directly into classrooms – you’ll see students who will make you proud.

That’s a long way of saying this: We want you to know we’re all in this together.
And we want you to know our commitment is real.
