What We're Doing

Here's just a quick, top 10 list of what's happening at the APS Education Foundation for 2015-16.

PNM Celebration

  1. The Foundation this year will make direct impact on literacy with the Guhl Literacy Awards -- a pair of $50,000 grants to APS elementary schools. The Foundation will award a school, or a consortium of schools, significant money to make a direct impact on literacy. Guhl, created by the Guhl Literacy Trust, will be the largest single award the Foundation has made in its 20-year history.
  2. But the granting doesn't stop there. The Foundation also will award classroom grants through Horizon Awards, aimed at classrooms in STEM, Literacy and Fine Arts. This year, about $125,000 will be distributed during the granting window, which will be in early fall.
  3. And we're still not done. This year, the Foundation will have grants for schoolwide projects through the Success Awards -- large, direct-impact funds that will go to schools that want to implement or improve programs that help schoolwide. A year ago, Success went to a math initiative at Manzano High School and an innovative STEM collaboration in both the West Mesa and Valley clusters. In addition, we also sponsor the Varsity Awards, directed to a key student need. In 2015-16, we put money in the hands of high school counselors so they could purchase ACT/SAT prep materials for high school students.
  4. The Foundation will host the sixth annual A is for Art! gala, a benefit art auction that raises tens of thousands in cash and in-kind donations for APS Fine Arts. The 2015 A is for Art! celebration is scheduled for Nov. 7 at Hotel Albuquerque and tickets are available through the Foundation at 878-6165. This year's presenting sponsor is Technology Integration Group.
  5. Our Board of Directors, which had only a few members five years ago, has grown to more than two-dozen members. Our board has developed a solid, productive committee structure that aggressively works to improve the Foundation and help Albuquerque Public Schools. Our board includes two APS students, many community leaders and the APS superintendent and president of the Board of Education, who serve as ex-officio members.
  6. With the help of Pepsi, the Foundation instituted the APS teacher-of-the-month award, which honors fine teachers at elementary, middle and high schools. Another key partner, Nusenda, sponsors a the Student of the Week campaign, in which some of Albuquerque's top kids are recognized weekly in the Albuquerque Journal.
  7. The Foundation serves as the fiduciary for the APS Community Clothing Bank, which serves students who don't have access to quality clothing. We hold two to three in-kind drives (new socks, shoes and underwear) to help replenish the most basic  need our students have. The Clothing Bank served more than 3,500 APS students last year, and the Foundation has granted $10,000 to the effort..
  8. On March 20, the Foundation will hold Miles for Minds -- a fun run that's growing by leaps and bounds, and, well, miles. With our partners at RunFit, we held a great event in 2015 and there's no question it will grow, with the proceeds benefiting both the Foundation's granting programs and anti-obesity and health programs administered by the Division of Student, Family and Community Supports.
  9. The Foundation's Superintendent's Cup has become a rousing success and a must-play stop for golfers in the community.  This year's event at the Canyon Club, formerly Four Hills Country Club was sold out.  APS employees, leadership members, vendors and community members made it a day of fun.
  10. One of the great honors an APS student can receive is to be named a Selfless Senior. More than two dozen students each spring from throughout the district are honored by the Foundation for their work on behalf of their families, schools and communities, and the event is attended by more than 300 people each spring. Thanks to Frank Frost, a noted Albuquerque photographer, who gives his time and talent to make the event a success.
