Greenhouse Project Provides Work Experiences for VVHS Students

A team of Volcano Vista teachers encouraged the collaboration of several school groups to design and build a greenhouse that would provide work experiences for students with disabilities and also raise money for continued access into the community. The project was funded by the Spring 2013 Horizon Awards.

CEC cosmetology students were treated to a hair cutting and styling demonstration and discussion of career options by local businessman and entrepreneur Mark “Pardo” Gonzales of the Mark Pardo family of salons and the Aveda Institute. He has been providing support and resources to the cosmetology department at the school for many years.

Horizon Grant Supports the Family Literacy Inclusion Project at Corrales ES

Struggling readers and their families are receiving support through targeted activities and events planned to improve reading scores for students and involve families in the process. FLIP, as the program is affectionately known, has varied components to positively impact students and their reading skills. It was funded by Bank of Albuquerque through the Spring 2013 Horizon Grants. The bank has a long history of supporting literacy in the community
