UNM Women's Basketball Coach Featured Speaker for Selfless Seniors

Yvonne Sanchez will take part in the ceremony recognizing the Class of 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 at Del Norte High.

University of New Mexico women’s basketball coach Yvonne Sanchez will be the featured speaker at the 2013 APS Education Foundation Selfless Seniors celebration.

Sanchez, who graduated from Eldorado High School in 1985, will be the first APS graduate to headline the event, which is scheduled for March 27 at 3:30 p.m. in the Del Norte High School gymnasium.

“Yvonne is a home-grown product through and through, and her passion shows as she rebuilds UNM women’s basketball,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “We’ve been fortunate and proud to have wonderful guest speakers over the years, but the fact that Yvonne is an APS product means a great deal.”

Sanchez was a three-year starter at Eldorado from 1982-85. During that period, the Eagles won a state-record 74 consecutive games and two Class AAAA titles. She graduated in 1989 from U.S. International University in San Diego and coached at San Diego State and New Mexico State before joining the UNM staff, where she worked under legendary coach Don Flanagan.

Selfless Seniors, sponsored by the Foundation and noted Albuquerque photographer Frank Frost, honors high school seniors who are giving back to their communities, often without being recognized for their efforts.

A community committee selected this year’s honorees from nominations sent to the Foundation this fall. The class of 2013 includes:

  • Matthew Lowrance, Margaret McGovney and Chelsea Otterness of Albuquerque High
  • Vivianne Gonzalez, Dominic Marquez and Alex Trujillo-Romero of Atrisco Heritage Academy
  • Ricky Garcia of Cibola
  • Corinne Foskey of Del Norte
  • Laverne Johnson of Freedom
  • Heather Rooke of Nex+Gen Academy
  • Haley Davisson and Annie Majewski of Eldorado
  • Karina Ayala Lugo and Di-Linh Hoang of Highland
  • Andrew Lopez and Brad Wible of La Cueva
  • Kirstie Lopez of Manzano
  • Jonah Fernandez and Medea Hill of Rio Grande
  • Valeria Ojeda and Brandon Padilla of Sandia
  • Brianna Andolina and Jessica Montano of Valley
