UNM Basketball Coach Steve Alford Encourages APS Employees to Support United Way

Lots of Donation Choices including APS Education Foundation. Deadline for Turning in Pledge Forms is Nov. 23.

November 3, 2011

Have you turned in your United Way pledge form yet?

UNM men’s basketball Coach Steve Alford, who has children in APS and is an ardent supporter of public education, has pledged his support.

“My children attend Albuquerque Public Schools. I know first-hand the issues that kids and parents face in today’s challenging world,” Coach Alford wrote in a recent letter, adding that he is joining the APS Board of Education and Superintendent Winston Brooks in asking APS employees to support United Way of Central New Mexico.

“In the world of coaching, teamwork is everything. I tell our players that every bit of effort and support we contribute makes all of us stronger,” Alford wrote. “The same holds true outside the Pit. When we as a community pull together on behalf of children and those in need, New Mexico wins.”

You have the option of giving some or all of your donation to the APS Education Foundation, which helps  support middle/high  school activities, fine arts, literacy and STEM needs. In fact, the Foundation’s Horizon Awards, funded in part through the APS Employees/United Way campaign, recently awarded 29 separate projects totaling more than $83,000 in classrooms throughout the district.

It’s your choice. We just ask that you consider giving. A little, a lot. That’s up to you, too.

Last year, APS employees gave more than $290,000, setting a record. We’re shooting for another record in 2011.

The deadline for turning in donation pledges is Nov. 23.

Like Coach Alford said, “United Way is working to make New Mexico a better place.”
