This Was Our Best Year Yet!

Thanks to all who participated in the fifth annual gala benefiting student artists, fine arts programs and the APS Education Foundation.

The numbers are in, and A is for Art! is A-OK.

Or even better.

The APS Education Foundation’s fifth annual Fine Arts Fundraiser netted more than $57,000 on Oct. 3 – a record for the event, said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus.

“I will never forget the looks on the faces of our artists as their work was sought and bought during the event,” he said.

A is for Art! is a silent and live auction of pieces made by APS high school students and some of their teachers. Forty percent of each sale goes to the artist, with the remaining 60 percent split between the Fine Arts Department and the Foundation. In all, more than 450 people attended the gala, not including the artists themselves, who chatted with guests as their art went up for auction.

In the live auction, the Del Norte High School Fine Arts Department was “bought” by RayLee Homes: A New Generation and Westwind Landscape Construction, whose owners teamed up in the bidding. Three student pieces also were purchased, and Casaus said the live auction with emcee Mark Ronchetti  of KRQE-News 13 was particularly successful.

“So many people combine to make this a great event,” he said. “We had dozens and dozens of volunteers, not the least of whom were Dana Wilson and Ann Jarrell, who chaired the event committee. They do it simply because they believe in the students we attempt to serve. It’s people like that, and the kids and teachers who actually do the work in the classroom, who are incredible.”
