Teachers, Schools Encouraged to Apply for Horizon Awards

APS Education Foundation sponsors semi-annual awards supporting literacy, fine arts, middle and high school activities and science/technology/engineering/math.

The APS Education Foundation is accepting applications for the fourth cycle of Horizon Awards that provide individuals up to $1,500 and school teams up to $5,000 for projects in four areas:

  • Literacy
  • Fine arts
  • Science/technology/engineering/math and
  • Middle and high school activities.

The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 14. Applications can be dropped off at the Foundation's office in the APS administration building, 6400 Uptown Blvd., Suite 630E, or they can be mailed to the APS Education Foundation, P.O. Box 25704, Albuquerque, NM, 87125-0704.

The Foundation has provided hundreds of teachers, classrooms and schools more than $230,000 in Horizon Awards since the program began in 2010. Thousands of students have been touched by the awards.

The Horizon Awards are funded by the Foundation's Horizon Campaign, a continuing effort by the Foundation to raise $1 million on behalf of district programs.

A committee made up of Foundation Board of Directors members and community representatives will once again select recipients based on their efforts to provide innovative, quality educational opportunities to students in APS.

“It’s always great to see the quality of projects our teachers outline in these applications," said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “We appreciate the support the Horizon Campaign has received, which allows us to fund these awards. None of it could happen without the involvement of our community – the funders of the Horizon Campaign who truly believe in public education.”

All past recipients except those who received awards last spring may reapply for the awards. Spring 2012 winners may reapply next semester.
