Teachers Appreciate Last Round of JAS Creative Grants

The JAS Creative Grants supported classroom teacher innovation for the last 18 years. The grants implemented in 2011-2012 mark the end of the program. The APS Education Foundation Horizon Awards are now providing even more support to teachers with the possibility of up to $5,000 for school teams that focus on literacy, fine arts, STEM and middle and high school activities.

Teachers Appreciate Last Round of JAS Creative Grants

La Cueva HS teacher Dawn Witiuk's math classroom was enhanced by the purchase of a document camera.

May 10, 2012

Dawn Witiuk of La Cueva HS is one of the teachers who received a grant during the last round of the JAS Creative Grants.  Her proposal See Math Now! requested funding for a document camera to allow active involvement with students during mathematics discussions, dialogue, and demonstrations of solutions.  She said, “The goal of my grant was to enhance my use of technology and to supplement my use of the Smartboard with a document camera so that students can actively participate in the mathematics classroom. “

The final year of the JAS Creative Grants awarded 46 grants for amounts up to $1,500.  Thanks to the APS Education Foundation, Bank of Albuquerque, Cabot Superior Micropowders, Lockheed Martin/Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Health System, Pepsi Bottling Group and Wells Fargo Bank for sponsoring the 2011-2012 JAS Creative Grants.   These businesses are continuing to support APS teachers and students through the APS Education Foundation Horizon Awards.  Information about the fall cycle will be available on the APSEF website in early August.   Classroom teacher grants  have the potential to greatly enhance student achievement.   On the final report form for her grant, Ms. Witiuk said,  “ I was able to deliver more material and delver deper into concepts with students as a result of having the document camera.  It was a true time saver!”
