Teacher Cites Research for Reason to Use Technology

Erin Mayer, a fourth grade teacher at Eubank, is this month's TIG/APS Education Foundation Innovation Award winner. It's not too late to nominate the next winners.

Her kids may only be in the fourth grade, but Eubank teacher Erin Mayer is already looking out for their future.

"Research shows that people who are fluent in the use of technology and can use technology to demonstrate what they know make on average $20,000 more a year than those who are not," said this month's Innovation Award winner. "Computer science is a top paying college degree and computer programming jobs are growing at two times the national average."

Mayer, who has been teaching for 10 years, uses the Promethean Board on a daily basis to deliver lessons, and her students use iPads, desktops and laptops to access assignments and research.

Technology Integration Group and the APS Education Foundation sponsor the Innovation Awards, which each month honor a district teacher who is advancing education through the use of technology, including the Promethean ActivBoards.

Each award winner receives a $1,600 prize to be used on technology. Mayer said she is planning on purchasing Apple TVs so that students can mirror their work to the class or small group discussions.

"I also want to expand the class set of iPads to increase availability for students to access sites and increase their ability to communicate through communication sites such as and I'm hoping some of the money can go towards apps for the iPads as well."
