Student of the Week Uriel Ortega

A fifth grader at Alameda Elementary School

Nusenda Credit Union, in partnership with the APS Education Foundation, highlights an APS student each week.

What Uriel’s teacher says about him: Uriel moved to Albuquerque from Juarez, Mexico when he was 8 years old.  When he started at Alameda in 3rd grade, he did not speak any English.  He reports that he was very scared because he couldn't communicate with his peers and his teacher.  During our last parent/teacher conference he told me that he wants to do well in school because he knows that his parents moved here "to give him a better life."

Uriel is one of the hardest working students I have ever had in my 16 years of teaching.  He comes to school each day with a positive attitude and is eager to be challenged in all subject areas.  Not only does he persevere through academic tasks, but he is a model citizen as well.  He strives to be a good friend to all and is empathetic to the needs of his peers.

Favorite subject: Math

Hobbies and activities: Soccer
