Student of the Week: Sophia Jaramillo

Congratulations to Sophia Jaramillo, a seventh grader at Washington Middle School, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation!

Tell us a little about your school experience:
From kindergarten to sixth grade I went to school at Saint Mary's. Last year I decided that I wanted to change schools. Since it was on short notice I chose my neighborhood school, Washington Middle School. I am so happy that I did it is an amazing school, I love all of my teachers and it is a really great environment there. Also, the students there are awesome. They were super helpful on my first weeks there and I am so happy to now have them for my friends. Going to Washington was the best school choice I've made.

What’s your favorite subject?
There are many amazing teachers at Washington. My favorite subjects in school are health, math, social studies and art. In health class, we got to make videos about everything middle schoolers are going through. In art, we get to work with a lot of different media, my favorite is clay. I really enjoy all of my classes at Washington. It is a great learning environment, with great support from the principal, teachers and all of the Staff.

What are your hobbies or activities, both at school and outside of school?
Other than my academics I go to an after school group called Young Philanthropists. Our main goal is to make our community and Washington a better place. Some of the things we do are garden, canned food drives, sell popcorn to raise money for school events or improvements, and we recycle. Our advisor for young philanthropists is awesome too. He comes up with all of these great ideas and he makes them happen, I think that's amazing. Even though it is my only my first year participating I love the group. Outside of school I have many activities and hobbies. I love to play tennis and do track and field. I love running. I am currently in a choir, Bella Voce, and have taken piano and voice lessons since I was 8 years old. I also love to dance. When I grow up I want to be a singer, dancer, or a teacher.
