Student of the Week: Sonjia Ronquillo

Congratulations to Sonjia Ronquillo, a 6th grader at Duranes Elementary, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation.

What can a parent or teacher say about this student?

As a 5th grade student last year, Sonjia Ronquillo was elected student president of our MicroSociety student government. She was so well liked that this year, as a 6th grade student, she was re-elected. The student presidency is the highest honor at our school. Sonjia used her leadership skills to help write the school’s constitution, lead the elective representative governing board and served as a role model for upholding the amendments and laws of this miniature School Society. Sonjia runs a society where students can write resumes, apply for jobs, work and receive a salary, submit business and budget proposals and participate in the banking and student court systems.
She listens to her fellow citizens and is respected by all students.

Favorite subject:

Sonjia always says, ‘I love math!”, and she loves the way her math teacher, Ms. Rael, makes sure that she and other students really understand middle school math.

Hobbies or activities, both at school and outside of school:

Sonjia loves to sing and learn new songs. She is the guest soloist on the National Anthem and has helped to plan and perform in the two Duranes student talent shows. She also loves public speaking and can give a speech at the drop of a hat. Outside school, Sonjia excels at all sports but especially baseball and kickball. She helps her brother and sister because she loves her parents, Shannon and Will Armijo, who have “pushed” her to to do her very best in school and in her life. She proudly says, “They are always there for me!”
