Student of the Week: Meico Hsiao

Congratulations to Meico Hsiao, an 8th grader at Desert Ridge Middle School, for being named the Student of the Week by the New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union and the APS Education Foundation.

Tell us a little about your school experience:

I find that being in Desert Ridge could not be any better. Although things can be quite bumpy, I still find that being a student of Desert Ridge is by far the best part of my childhood so far. Over the past few years at Desert Ridge I have matured mentally greatly. I haven’t matured physically much though, and I have always been the short kid in the grade. I have to say, my eighth grade year is probably the best out of Desert Ridge. Not only has it been tremendous, but it has given me time to get serious in some areas of my life. Without the great teachers and staff at Desert Ridge, I would probably be crashing down a hill. Thank you to Mr. Hughes, the principal of Desert Ridge of handling the school in such a great manner.

What’s your favorite course?

Music—there’s no doubt about that. There is absolutely nothing that can compare to music and being a percussionist and a pianist completes my childhood. I can’t possibly compare my jazz band and my symphonic band, so let’s just say that they are equally grand. Other than music, I find science to be interesting.

What are your hobbies or activities, both at school and outside of school?

I take private lessons in music, and music is what I like to do. In fact, I have two different teachers—one for piano and one for percussion. Everyone calls my piano teacher Mrs. Chocolate, and she is the reason why I have been successful in music. I have to thank my parents for finding such a great piano teacher. Without them finding such a great teacher, I wouldn’t want to even think about where I might be right now. Jeffrey Cornelius is my percussion teacher, and I could not ask for a better teacher. I met him in sixth grade in Desert Ridge, actually. Mr. Cornelius absolutely annihilates the other percussionists, so I am profoundly happy to be one of his students.
