Student of the Week Camila Chacon

8th grader at John Adams Middle School

Nusenda Credit Union, in partnership with the APS Education Foundation, highlights an APS student each week.

A little about Camila’s school experience: As a 6th grader I struggled with behavior and getting along with students and teachers. When I got to 7th grade I started realizing that getting in trouble was not going to get me anywhere. I started helping in a special needs classroom. I really enjoyed working with these students and felt like I had found my place at John Adams.  At the end of 7th grade, I was really struggling with my grades and didn’t know if I would even pass. I started thinking about the students I was working with and realized that I needed to be a positive example for them because if I can do it so can they. In 8th grade, I started working with students with autism and got really attached to them. So much so that I feel more like they are part of my family. There is one specific student who has become my sunshine. No matter what mood I am in he finds a way to cheer me up, even though he is non-verbal. He has such a special place in my heart and thinking about leaving him to go to high school really breaks my heart.

Favorite subject: Social Studies because I’m obsessed with learning about history.

Hobbies and activities: In school, I consider helping the autism teachers my hobby. Out of school, I love playing soccer and spending time with my family and my sisters.
