Second Annual Superintendent's Cup Sets Records

The golf tournament raised more than $30,000 for the APS Education Foundation.

They came, they golfed, they had fun.

But mostly, they supported kids in Albuquerque Public Schools.

The second annual APS Education Foundation Superintendent’s Cup set records of all sorts late last month, raising about $30,000 for the Foundation and solidifying the tournament’s hold on golfers’ imaginations throughout the metro area.

A record 296 golfers played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course, making SuperCup one of the biggest golf tournaments in the area.

“It was just unbelievable to see how much passion people in this community have for the tournament – but more importantly, the kids in APS,” said Superintendent Winston Brooks.

The tournament’s title sponsor was B and D Industries of Albuquerque, which has long supported efforts throughout the district. Other key sponsors included the Albuquerque New Car and Truck Dealers Association, Casa Auto Group, Concentra, CorVel Corporation, Griego Professional Services, Modrall Sperling Law Firm, NACR, Nationwide, New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union, Technology Integration Group, PNM, RayLee Homes: A New Generation, Fuddrucker’s, Kim Jew Sports Photography, Papa John’s, Pepsi, RBC Capital Markets, Sound and Signal of New Mexico, Veronica Garcia, Waste Management, Wells Fargo and Williamson Restoration.

Firms both large and small played vital support roles, as did dozen of volunteers from throughout the community and APS. The tournament had an interesting mix of APS leadership, principals, teachers and support staff, plus key players in Albuquerque’s business community.

“The truth is, you can’t run a tournament of this size without volunteers,” said Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus. “I arrived at the course long before dawn, and we had many, many people already there, doing everything they could to make the tournament run smoothly. And you can’t believe how helpful the folks at APS Maintenance and Operations were – they handled a lot of difficult transportation issues that would’ve been hard for us to do. We are in their debt.”

Plans are already underway for SuperCup 2014, which promises to be even bigger and better.
