Schools and APSEF Thankful for Business Partners

The APS Education Foundation Join-a-School program has provided support to APS students and schools for 28 years. Over 220 businesses offer resources and support to schools in hundreds of individual partnership relationships. Many businesses or organizations partner with multiple schools.

Robin Mauck and Zuni ES students enjoy a music session during a WOW Wednesday after-school class.

Principal Kim Woodley at Hodgin ES wants to thank Papa John’s for delivering pizzas hot, ready and cut “just the way we like them” for school events.  She also thanks Chick-Fil-A for supporting the staff at the welcome back breakfast by providing fruit and chicken biscuits at a “great deal/great prize.”  The company also helped Hodgin recognize their custodians with a free lunch.  Bravo Cucina Italiana has been a great partner to APS and the Education Foundation since opening six years ago; Principal Woodley wants to thank them for providing a free lunch each month for her and a teacher to get away and discuss new educational initiatives over a delightful meal.  She thanks Horace Mann and Los Cuates, as well.

St. John’s United Methodist Church has partnered with Zuni ES for over 15 years.  The church has implemented an after-school program at the suggestion of Principal Debbie Elder.  WOW Wednesdays began to offer an educational and fun alternative for children who walked home on early Wednesdays; it continues because now Wednesday is the one day the school doesn’t offer after-school clubs on site.  Classes in art, drama, music, science and even cooking are offered, with hands-on activities in small groups the focus.  The program is free to students and funded by the St. John’s UMC Foundation.  It is Wow 2staffed by volunteers, many who are retired APS educators themselves.   Forty students each semester have participated and it’s not unusual to have 20 or more on a waiting list, reports Brandie Spletzer, Director of Children and Family Ministries, who helps to coordinate the program.

The APS Education Foundation offers thanks at this time of year for the great community partners that provide all sorts of support and resources, volunteer, in-kind and financial, to our schools and students during the entire year.  There are many many great stories out there.  Please send us more and we’ll try to publicize the power of partnerships.  Happy Thanksgiving!
