A is for Art! Allows 2014 Rio Grad to Give Back

Shannon Jones will be among the artists featured in the fifth annual art auction and gala on Oct. 3.

For Shannon Jones, having her artwork auctioned at the fifth annual APS Education Foundation A is for Art! benefit is her way of supporting the programs that ignited and cultivated her passion for art.

“APS is where it all started for me,” said Jones, a 2014 Rio Grande High School graduate. “If it wasn’t for the teachers I had and the monetary support for the program, they wouldn’t have had the access to help people like me realize they have a passion for art.”

Jones said that if it weren’t for her art classes -- which she was assigned to after her elective choices were full -- she would never have gotten into art the way she has and found the creative outlet for expressing herself

That is why having her artwork auctioned is so rewarding, not only as an honor for her artwork, but also as a way to help fund the programs that taught her. A is for Art!, which includes some of the best art from the district’s high schools, benefits the APS fine arts programs, Foundation, and the artists themselves.

Jones will have a handful of her pieces in the silent auction as well as an acrylic painting in the live auction. The live auction piece was inspired by her memories of traditions in her family.

“I made the piece for an art show about culture and tradition,” Jones said. “When I thought about my childhood, I remembered making homemade tortillas and fry bread with my mom.”

Jones’ pieces, among more than 150 works of art, were selected by a committee of the APS Foundation Board during the district’s annual Metro Show last spring. To be included in the Metro event, pieces – painting, photography, sculpture and jewelry – are picked by a jury of professional artists. Several pieces of artwork from APS teachers will also be featured at the benefit auction.

A is for Art! will be held Friday, Oct. 3 at Hotel Albuquerque. The event, which includes a dinner and live musical performances by APS high schools, is scheduled to go from 5:30-9 p.m. The silent auction runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m., with the live auction to follow. Tickets are $50.
