Fall 2012 Horizon Grant Takes Lew Wallace ES Students Around the World
Students in the LWES gifted program read the Jules Verne classic and prepared a global experience to be shared by the entire school. The multi-disciplinary project-based experience included reading and discussing the novel and researching places Phineas Fogg and Passepartout visited on their 1872 journey.

Sandra Daffron, a science and math teacher at Madison Mid-School who was recognized as the Pepsi/APS Education Foundation Teacher of the Month, says she'll continue to teach even after she retires later this month.

Sandra Daffron may be retiring at the end of the school year, but she has no plans to quit teaching. Her most important students will be her two young grandchildren.

After 22 years in the classroom, the Madison Mid-School math and science teacher was recognized in the final month of her career as the Pepsi/APS Education Foundation Teacher of the Month.

“It’s unbelievable the amount of time and effort that goes into teaching a class day after day, so for me, this is a really special honor that recognizes teachers,” said Daffron. “It’s nice to give teachers credit, to recognize that we really do work hard.”

Daffron has been teaching at Madison for 17 years. One of her former seventh grade science students is fellow Teacher of the Month Amy Melia of Sierra Vista Elementary School, who was honored earlier this year.

“There are so many good teachers coming into the profession, so I decided it was time to move on and make room for the great teachers coming in,” Daffron said.

Daffron has spent her entire career teaching middle school, spending her first years at Grant. Her teaching hasn’t been limited to the classroom. Over the years, Daffron has taught dance and Sunday school and has sponsored several extracurricular activities including Science Olympiad, the Science Bowl, the Model Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Challenge and MathCounts, in which one of her students competed at the national level.

Daffron’s principal, Marcie Johnson, describes her as a teacher leader. “She is a mentor to a lot of teachers, so it stands to reason that we should recognize her,” Johnson said.
