Nomination deadline extended to Jan. 26

Up to four educators will be honored in the spring.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation, with the support of the district, will debut the APS Hall of Honor in the spring of 2017 – an annual recognition of some of the best educators to grace our classrooms, playing fields and hallways.

Up to four awardees will be recognized at a new event – the Gold Bar Gala -- on April 21, 2017 at Sandia Resort. The Foundation also will honor the 2017 class of Selfless Seniors, key community contributors and our first class of the Best in Class – some of our most effective grant-winners who’ve done wonderful things with the funds the community has provided to their classrooms and schools.

For more than a century, APS has been central to the growth of our community – in large part, thanks to the tireless contributions from educators in classrooms and schools who went the extra mile for their students.

We aim to give those people their due with a soon-to-be-constructed area at City Center that will recognize their accomplishments. And each year, we’ll add to that place of pride.

A committee composed of Foundation board members, community leaders, teachers and retired APS employees will take nominations through January 26.

Selecting the Nominees

Criteria for nominating a former educator can be found below. A critical consideration will be one of impact – we want to honor those who’ve made significant contributions in the lives of their students. That’s why we’ll ask for three letters of recommendation in addition to the actual nomination.

Who is an educator? That definition runs the gamut in our schools – teachers, educational assistants, counselors, principals, administrators, custodians, cafeteria workers and maintenance technicians.

The committee will meet in early 2017 to select the recipients. All members of the class must receive a majority vote of those present and voting on the selection committee. Additionally, the committee will select and rank two alternates to be considered in the event that a recipient is unable to accept the honor.

An honoree will not be inducted into the APS Hall of Honor unless he or she attends the induction ceremony (unless seriously ill or deceased). Those not selected will remain in consideration for induction for five years, including their initial nomination year, after which they are not eligible to reapply.

The announcement of the first class of honorees will be made in the spring of 2017.
