Meet Selfless Senior Marceliano Varoz

Over the next several weeks, we are going to introduce you to our 2018 Selfless Seniors who will be recognized at the Gold Bar Gala on April 27.

Marceliano, also called Marcel for short, is an inspiration to everyone he meets. He faces many challenges every day because he lives with cerebral palsy, but does not let those challenges keep him from participating in many activities, and also helping others to do the same.

Marcel’s participation in sports is the reason that Cibola High School was able to become more accessible. The school secured funding for school improvements that allow students and community members in wheelchairs to enjoy sporting events.

Marcel participates with many organizations including San Gabriel the Archangel Church to help feed the less fortunate, and Dogwood Therapy Services to help train service dogs. He has been training service dogs for the past seven years.

Marcel works hard each and every day to not only learn and achieve good grades, but to make sure fellow students and teachers feel part of a larger school community. He is dedicated to making sure that everyone feels included and appreciated.

Lori Mabrey of Cibola High School writes, “He reminds us of our commonalities, and how people, ALL people, deserve respect, to be treated with dignity, and given a chance to live life to their potential.”

Marcel’s mother, Stephanie Varoz, writes, “Marcel reminds me to slow down, to listen with more than just my ears, and to connect with people from my heart. I am grateful to know him.”

Now in his last semester of senior year, Marcel reflected on what it means to be selfless and wanted to share one of his favorite prayers attributed to St. Francis, “Lord, make us instruments of Your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is darkness, light. Grant that we may not so much seek to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”

Thanks to the generosity of Frank Frost Photography, Marcel and the 13 other 2018 Selfless Seniors will also be recognized at the Gold Bar Gala on April 27. The Gold Bar Gala, presented by Award Sponsors Comcast and Technology Integration Group, raises money for school and classroom grants awarded through the APS Education Foundation. Tickets are on sale now.
